Shinjuku District
From the Omiya Bonsai Village it was then back to the train
station, where we jumped on the Shoan-Shinjuku Line. Before heading back to the
hotel, as we were passing on the way back, we had planned to visit the Shinjuku
District. Featured in more advertising, films and tv programs, Shinjuku is the
typical modern sci-fi Tokyo experience! Most of what makes the city tick is
packed into this busy district…neon lights, massive video screens, soaring
buildings, clubs, bars, restaurants, shops, crowds of people!
At the heart of Shinjuku is the busy train station, which is a hub for over 3 million commuters each day, making it one of the busiest in the world! The west side of the station Nishi-Shinjuku is a sensible perfectly planned gridded streets of massive corporate buildings. Where Tokyo metropolitan government resides. Whereas the East Side of Shinjuku where we visited is one of Tokyo’s largest and liveliest entertainment districts. It was a super cool area to walk around, and we timed it just right as it started to get dark, the place just lit up…literally! It was absolutely buzzing with people mostly Japanese, but a few foreigners too, though we didn’t hear anyone from England speaking. The district and Tokyo itself are just so far from anything we have experienced here in the UK, it’s certainly a different world! Even with our photo’s, it’s hard to express the district. After taking loads of photos and finding a nice spot for a little coffee break it was time to hop back on the train and head back. Before getting back to the hotel, we found a nice restaurant as we were both famished from the day’s exertions! We walked just over 7.2 miles.
