Shinbuya District

Leaving Shinbuya station the place was just a hive of activity and absolutely packed! Shinbuya is where the famous crossing intersection which is just in front of the Hachiko Exit of the train station and is where every British Japanese program seems to start from! The crossing was packed with people, lots of tourists…it was quite funny watching everyone just crossing the intersection then turning around and crossing it again, all while filming themselves and each other. Though we have to admit, we did do this ourselves!

We had planned to and arrived at just the right time, as it was starting to become dark. The crossing is surrounded by tall buildings filled with neon lights and massive adverting screens, which was just simply cool and something out of a sci-fi movie! The cool back streets coming off from the crossing were also neon lit, also featuring in many films and programs.

Shinbuya is one of the 23 wards of Tokyo and has gained a representation as a popular shopping and entertainment area. It is one of Tokyo’s most vibrant and colourful districts, being full of shops, restaurants, and nightclubs. Shinbuya is also the centre of the youth fashion and culture, with it’s streets being the birthplace of many of Japan’s fashion and entertainment trends.

Despite how busy the area was, we managed to somehow stubble upon a quiet café, so we took the opportunity to take a break have a coffee and watch the neon lights! Shibuya is a great “we’ve been there” place. After an enjoyable evening exploring the district, we then headed back to the station to catch a short train journey back to central Tokyo station, where we had started our day. Back to the hotel, a quick freshen up and back out for a nice meal, and beer or two. This day we had walked just over 8.5 miles.
